Course Description
This is the first semester course of the calculus-based University Physics I & II sequence, designed to provide a foundational introduction to physics for students majoring in the sciences and engineering. University Physics I will focus on problem solving skills based upon well established physical principles of both classical and modern physics. Class time will be devoted to handling difficult or key concepts and sample problems, but not all of the assigned reading from the text. Demonstrations, problem-solving, questions and discussion will be the emphasis during class time. Reading ahead in the text is an important element in this format.
We will investigate motion, applying Newton’s Laws and conservation principles of energy, momentum and angular momentum for particles and rigid bodies, with additional applications in gravitation and fluids. These are covered in chapters 1-13 of the text. While the lectures will be closely related to the text material, they may occasionally include discussions beyond the text. Students are encouraged to investigate the reasonableness of the principles upon which the course is based. Truth as discovered from the behavior of the physical universe should also be consistent with truth as revealed in the inspired Word of God. Students are encouraged to examine how physics can actually enrich one’s own personal faith.
