Survey Studying Activity for Civil Engineering Students
Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics is a core compulsory course for students majoring in Civil Engineering, playing a vital role in laying a solid foundation for their professional learning and future engineering practice. To help students deeply understand and flexibly apply the key knowledge of this course, further improve their English expression skills, and enhance the rigor and practicality of their learning process, we specially initiated the "Survey Studying" activity, which has achieved remarkable results and become a wonderful practice in promoting students’ all-round development.
The activity was carried out in the form of group participation, which not only cultivated students’ teamwork awareness but also gave full play to their subjective initiative. Each group closely combined with campus life and daily study, independently selected distinctive research topics, and went through the whole process of topic determination, data collection, statistical analysis, and result sorting with the guidance of professional knowledge of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics. This practice not only deepened their understanding of theoretical knowledge but also improved their ability to apply theories to solve practical problems.
To ensure the professionalism and authority of the activity, we invited four distinguished judges: Dr. Shabana, Dr. Afify, Dr. Ning, and Ms. Chen. During the activity, the judges watched the presentation of each group carefully, and made in-depth comments and guidance from multiple dimensions, including teamwork cohesion, the scientificity of the research process, the completeness of the group report, and the fluency and professionalism of students’ English presentation skills. They put forward targeted and valuable suggestions, helping students find their shortcomings in the activity and providing clear directions for their future learning and improvement.
Through this "Survey Studying" activity, students not only consolidated their professional theoretical foundation but also significantly improved their English expression and practical research abilities. More importantly, they established a more rigorous learning attitude and enhanced their confidence in applying professional knowledge to practice. This activity has not only enriched the form of course teaching but also provided a valuable platform for students to show themselves and grow up, laying a better foundation for their future academic development and career path.
